Back to Regular (aka Boring) Style

At the risk of hanging on the Christmas look for too long, I changed back to a default style (Gettysburg). The default Movable Type styles are a good starting point, but I really would like to come up with my own design. All in time I suppose. Just for grins, here's a screenshot of the Christmas theme: CantoniOrgXmas (PNG, 46... (more)

Christmas Hoops

This year we bought the kids a basketball hoop -- not too soon to start preparing for that scholarship! The smartest move we made was deciding to not assemble this thing on Christmas Eve. It took me the good part of a day to assemble it in the daylight. Christmas Hoops... (more)

Christmas Pictures

Now that things are settling down a little, I’m posting some of the pictures from yesterday. We had a great celebration and the Nintendo GameCube from Santa was definitely a hit with the kids! Update: Pictures temporarily offline due to a problem.... (more)

Disused London Underground Stations

If you saw the latest James Bond movie -- Die Another Day -- you'll probably remember the scene Bond and M (and later, Q) in a disused Underground station. Recently I ran across an entire web site dedicated to these stations, including some notes on the location used for the latest James Bond movie Die Another Day. http://www.starfury.demon.co.uk/uground/ [From Feet... Choosing the Right Archive Type

While making the transition to Movable Type, one of the decisions I spent a lot of time on was the best archive type. I settled on archiving individual archives by date and modified all of the templates to work accordingly. (more)

Christmas Theme

Thanks to CSS and some free Christmas backgrounds, Cantoni.org is now sporting a new holiday theme!... (more)

Invisibles

I just found a link to the Invisibles collection at FilmWise.com. This is very cool. Warning: This site can suck up lots of your time when you should be working!... (more)

Improved security with CGIwrap

Having successfully set up MoveableType, I chose the default instructions which tell you to set each of your weblog directories with permission 777 (basically, read/write/execute by anyone). This allow the web server (running as user 'nobody') to write files into your web file space, but could also be a security risk. Today I dug a little further and found that... (more)
After almost 8 months of use with CityDesk, I've moved Cantoni.org over to Movable Type. CityDesk is great and I still use it for a couple of other sites, but there were a few limitations that I wanted to move past.... (more)

Digital Prints from iPhoto

With my subscription to Apple's .Mac service, I received a "special" offer to receive 100 free 4x6 prints through Kodak. With the Christmas card season coming up, we decided to give it a try. The ordering through iPhoto was certainly easy, but lacked some information (e.g., we chose "express" shipping but have no idea how long it will take). Later:... (more)

Posting from w.bloggar

This is another reason I wanted to give Movable Type a try: the ability to post from other software applications. I'm posting this from w.bloggar which is a VB Windows app that can talk to Movable Type through its XML-RPC interface. Cool!... (more)

Moving to Movable Type

My experiment with Movable Type is going well, so now I'm preparing to change over from CityDesk. Here are a few things I've needed to change or tweak so far, just for my future reference: Turned on Individual, Monthly, and Category archives and tweaked their templates Changed references to each posting to be a permalink Removed the calendar from the... Finally changing my Yahoo! ID

Like most people, I've had a Yahoo! ID and mail account for a long time. In addition to being useful for throw-away things like registering for software downloads, I use it for all of the Yahoo! Groups that I've subscribed to.... (more)

Playing with archives

There are a lot of choices for archiving the blog entries. By default it is capturing individual entries as well as by month. I've just turned on "archive daily", so we'll see how well that works. It's also nice to see that the default RSS template creates a syndication feed that validates. Update 12/12: Now creating a valid RSS 2.0... (more)

Experimenting with MovableType

I've finally decided to give MovableType a try to see how it compares to CityDesk. (more)

Stylesheets and templates

Okay, I managed to update the style to the 'Rusty' style from the movabletype.org website. At least the layout is close to what I'm looking for, but I'll probably change the colors and possibly fonts a little bit. This layout looks strange with only a couple of short entries. The right-hand pane wraps all the way to the left at... (more)

First Post

First post from Movable Type which has just been installed as a potential replacement for CityDesk.... (more)
