Having worked for Palm for as long as I did (and having managed the desktop software team), I’ve continue to stick with Palm Desktop to keep track of my contacts, calendar and so on. Today it crashed on me, so I clicked Yes to send the error report to Microsoft. I know there’s no one at Palm that will ever pick up these crash reports, but it’s an old habit.
The Microsoft Windows Error Reporting site gave this summary of my problem:
This problem was caused by Palm Desktop. Palm Desktop was created by PalmSource, Inc.. Microsoft has been unable to contact the manufacturer and has no further information available at this time.
Ouch! Even better was their final recommendation:
If you are unable to fix this problem and continue to receive errors, you can also remove Palm Desktop.
If you want to get a glimpse of the current level of support, check out the Palm Desktop download page. I challenge you to make sense of all the notes and caveats on that page. Don’t even think about running it on Vista — it’s not supported.
I guess Palm Desktop is getting near the end of its useful life. Maybe we’ll all just switch to Outlook and get it over with.

Palm Desktop for Mac has changed very little since the mid nineties when it was known as Claris Organiser. Palm do not seem very future proof to me, and whilst I have owned several Palm PDA's, and the hardware has been robust, desktop support has been tragic at best. When my Z22 dies, it will be an iPod Touch. The last TRULY great PDA I had was a Newton!!
Most Palm contents will sync to iCal, but what about Memos? What simple desktop app. will sync Memos? I will have my best black suit dry-cleaned ready for the funeral. Palm is DEAD.
I've been using Palm for nearly ten years. I consider the basic functionality next to perfect because of the simplicity.
But it's been all downhill with Palm since the 3com version of the company got gobbled up. Palm is definitely dying. My Centro is the last Palm I will own.
I'm just not sure where to turn next for a replacement. I will not use Winblows on my handheld, and I also refuse to lock myself into CrApple products.
I want something with staying power and something that won't morph into an abortion like Palm ultimately did. I'm thinking Android.
Since the last comment..did someone find an another application lise the palm desktop...i also work with that since ten years... and there is no other application as so easy to work with...someone find something...??? thanks...
